One Robe, One Bowl by Ryokan

How can we ever lose interest in life?
Spring has come again
And cherry trees bloom in the mountains.

I came to this village to see the peach blossoms
but spent the day instead
Looking at the flowers along the river bank.

The willows are in full bloom!
I want to pile up the blossoms
Like mountain snow.

Beneath the willows, singing and laughing
with my friends; this fine spring day
Is truly full of joy.

In the pond near my hut
the lotus flowers, covered with dew,
Bloom in a row.

The wind has brought
enough fallen leaves
To make a fire.

some poems I loved by Ryokan, translated by John Stevens
